"American Idol" is a spin-off of the successful British show, "Pop Idol," where thousands of contestants compete for a major recording contract. The newest reality show by Fox is a nationwide talent search known as "American Idol," and kids from all over the country came directly to Hollywood hoping to make it big on the show.

Beginning as the television phenomenon Pop Idol over in the UK, American Idol came to these shores last summer and became an overnight success, much like the eventual winner, Kelly Clarkson. With two shows each week, American Idol's audience grew every time out, culminating when over 30 million viewers tuned in for the finale.

The second season of American Idol was even more successful! After 50,000 auditioners and months of singing, Ruben Studdard was crowned the next American Idol!
